Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Excellence Initiative

From PhD to Professor

HU promotes and challenges its researchers in every phase of their academic career.

HU Postdoctoral Fellowships and Scholarships

The postdoctoral programme offers two funding formats. HU Postdoctoral Fellowships are fixed-term positions that are internationally advertised. Fellows use the funding period to carry out their own research project or apply for third-party funding. Postdoctoral Scholarships provide interim funding to outstanding postdoctoral students to allow them to publish their dissertation, spend time at a foreign university, or prepare a funding application. Half of all Fellowships and Scholarships are awarded to female researchers.

Junior Professorship

To provide better support during the Junior Professorship phase, the tenure-track option should be given greater consideration when positions are advertised. In cases where there is a gap between a Junior Professorship expiring and a professorial position becoming vacant, the Strategic Innovation Fund will accept applications for interim funding.

Senior Advisor

When leading researchers retire, the University loses a great wealth of knowledge and experience. HU will therefore use funds from the Institutional Strategy to set up positions for Senior Advisors. Like senior professors in teaching, these individuals will advise research projects, provide mentoring to young researchers and get involved in projects like the Humboldt Goes to School initiative.
