Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Excellence Initiative

Goal 1: Excellent framework conditions for top-level research

The central concept of individuality forms the core of the Institutional Strategy. The focus on this concept stems from the conviction that research should not be obliged to comply with predefined structures but that the structures should be as flexible as possible to allow room for research and, above all, to meet the requirements of the scientists and scholars involved.

To promote top-level research, HU’s Institutional Strategy foresees the establishment of a Strategic Innovation Fund, which will focus mainly on the successful HU research format of Integrative Research Institutes (IRIs). In its Institutional Strategy, HU presents a comprehensive development plan for three IRIs funded by the Strategic Innovation Fund. This plan envisages the further development of IRIS Adlershof, which was founded in 2009; the establishment of the IRI for the Life Sciences, a collaboration project between HU, the Max Delbrück Center and the Charité at Campus Nord; and promotion of the IRI THESys (The Great Transformation of Human-Environmental Systems) for research on the topics of sustainability, land use and globalisation.

As “the Role-model Cooperative University”, HU aims to use both the IRIs and the establishment of a Centre of Expertise for Cooperation in Academic Research to improve collaborative research in the Berlin-Brandenburg region; the objectives here are open cooperation structures that meet research needs, and the optimal exploitation of existing potential at the points of convergence between research at universities and non-university research institutes.

In addition, the Strategic Innovation Fund can be used to support three further funding programmes: the internationalisation of the university, gender equality (in the Caroline von Humboldt Programme) and flexible and rapid start-up and interim funding for excellent research and teaching projects.
