School of Analytical Sciences Adlershof (SALSA)

The work of analytical chemists touches on many aspects that affect the quality of our daily lives – from identifying softening agents posing health risks in plastic toys, analysing fine particles in the air we breathe to monitoring the quality of the food we eat. Analytical sciences play a key role in devising scientific and technical solutions to problems of everyday life and provide the foundation for innovative fields such as nanotechnology and materials science.

Analytical chemistry is positioned in a rather fluid zone between the other natural sciences; for example, tools from physics and biochemistry often need to be employed. The SALSA Graduate School aims to add new impetus to the analytical sciences by taking an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research, by setting up a new curriculum and through the close collaboration of experts from the fields of analytical and physical chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, modelling and educational science.

The Graduate School will be part of “Analytic City Adlershof”, a competence centre bundling university, non-university and industrial expertise available at the Adlershof site to focus on questions and problems related to analytical chemistry. A bilateral partnership will be established with the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich with the aim of fostering scientific exchange and developing a joint “Curriculum in Analytical Sciences”.
