Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin submits proposals for Graduate Schools, Clusters of Excellence and an Institutional Strategy in the second phase of the Excellence Initiative

On 1 September 2011, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin submitted 15 full proposals for the funding lines Graduate Schools, Clusters of Excellence and an Institutional Strategy to the DFG and the German Council of Science and Humanities. This means that HU is applying for funding to promote top-level research in all three funding lines: with its Institutional Strategy, “Education through learning and research: individuality – openness – guidance”, four Clusters of Excellence (including two renewal proposals from the first phase), and ten Graduate Schools (including six renewal proposals).

HU President Jan-Hendrik Olbertz explained the strengths of the Institutional Strategy: “HU has decided to build on its roots and meet the current challenges facing German universities in its own way by placing the individual at the heart of our Institutional Strategy. The development of the full potential of individuals at the University is the most important basis for excellent research and teaching, which depends on creativity and freedom of research.”

The Excellence Initiative was set up in 2005 to strengthen research in Germany, increase its competitiveness, and raise its international profile. The DFG and the German Council of Science and Humanities will decide on the initial proposals and renewals in the summer of 2012. The total funding volume provided to the DFG by the federal and state governments will increase by 30 percent to around €2.7 billion with a funding period until 2017.
